For your convenience, we encourage you to bring a cart or wagon to carry your plant haul.
For everyone’s safety, we will not be running shuttle or tram service. We will provide very limited service for those individuals requiring special assistance.

Experience both foundational postures and creative variations that will strengthen, open, and restore your body and mind.
This class includes a gentle warm up and cool down to nourish yourself with a well-rounded experience. Enjoy resting in savasana accompanied by crystal sound bowls.

No other medium can capture the translucent quality of light like watercolor. In this course you will learn how to use this inherent ability of watercolor to create beautiful transparent colors that captures the light and brilliance of the garden. Basics, that are the backbone of a successful painting such as color theory, composition, and design elements will be covered. You will learn how to work with painting from a photograph and from still life.
The goal of the class is to make a difficult medium easier to learn and manage while producing beautiful paintings you will be proud of.
Participants must bring their chosen subject reference materials to class, such as photographs taken in the Garden, plants, flowers or other objects of interest. Basic knowledge of watercolor painting is required.
This class occurs weekly on TUESDAYS beginning on 04/13/2021 through 05/18/2021 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm Eastern Time.
Instructor Bio: Marilyn Valiente is a visual artist living in South Florida. After her bachelor’s degree in art education from the University of Florida, she continued her education in psychology having achieved a Master’s degree in mental health counseling and a PhD in pastoral psychology. Her paintings have been exhibited both nationally and internationally. She is a signature member of both the Miami Watercolor Society and the Florida Watercolor Society. Among her recent awards in watercolors alone by the Miami Watercolor Society is “Judges Recognition” spring exhibition 2021, and “First place” in the spring exhibition 2018 exhibition, “Best in show” fall exhibition 2017. She is past president of Miami Watercolor Society for the year 2017 and 2018. Marilyn is currently president of the Coral Gables chapter the oldest and prestigious professional organization of women artist: The National League of American PEN women.

Students at all levels are welcome to learn the fascinating art of pastels. Discover how to paint in soft pastel, considered by many as the purest of painting media. Soft pastel is bright, colorful and easy to learn. Award-winning Miami artist, Dan Bondroff, will teach students how to create tropical landscape paintings in soft pastel from concept to completion.
PLEASE NOTE: This class occurs weekly on Tuesday beginning on 04/13/2021 through 05/18/2021 (six sessions) from 1 pm to 4 pm.
Instructor Bio: Dan Bondroff has a B.S. in Art/Visual Communication from Towson University. Working with pastels, he enjoys capturing those often overlooked and fleeting moments that occur in the natural world. He also looks forward to guiding his students as they make their own discoveries.

Partnering with Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, Miami-based artist Lauren Shapiro presents Molding the Future, a project that involves the creation of a site-specific ceramic sculpture to be displayed at Fairchild from June 1 – August 31, 2021.
To complete the sculpture, Shapiro will engage the local community through a series of hands-on, physically-distanced clay molding activities at the Garden.
Participants will contribute to the development of the artwork by pressing clay into silicone molds of plant textures gathered from Fairchild’s landscape. The clay textures will then be added to a larger modular sculpture created by the artist and exhibited in the Tropical Conservatory.
Participants are not required to have previous experience in ceramics.
Workshops will take place throughout the afternoon on Saturday, April 17th at 1:00- 2:00pm, 2:15 – 3:15pm and 3:30 – 4:00pm.
15 tickets available per workshop session. Masks and physical-distancing are required.
The program Molding the Future is supported by an Arts Challenge grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
The public exhibition Collective Textures is made possible by the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners

The Miami Seed Share comes to Fairchild!
In this hands-on workshop, learn how to grow and propagate native plants from stem cuttings and seeds. During the class, you will learn how to properly collect stem cuttings, prepare the plants for cloning, and learn how to care for the plants that will nourish your garden. Propagate native plants for butterflies and bees!
Cutting tools, pots, pens and popsicle sticks for labeling will be provided. This class takes place outdoors.

Sidney Sherman is a fine art photographer and self portrait artist originally from New Jersey. She completed her undergraduate degree in Creative Advertising at the University of Miami in 2018. She then accepted a fellowship at Miami for the following year to pursue her MFA in Photography. She is currently working as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at UM.

Share and get creative along with other fellow artists under the guidance of Carlos Gallostra in our live seven-day Painting Studio: From Portraits to Florals. Designed for beginners and seasoned artists alike, this figurative painting workshop positions the participant to explore subject matter ranging from portraits, landscapes, and florals. Using your own photo reference as the muse , you will learn how to effectively develop your subject in oil paint through tailored mentoring and critiquing. Students already working in acrylic are also welcomed. The workshop introduces the student to a step-by-step process that facilitates capturing the subject from the initial contour to the fully rendered form in tonal value and color. Topics discussed will range from ideas on observation, measurement, color mixing and expressive mark making. Through in depth investigation, the students will employ a signature approach towards crafting their own masterwork.

BIOGRAPHY: Carlos Gallostra is a representational artist whose practice has been shaped under numerous celebrated mentors in the U.S. and Italy throughout the years. Join Dr. Sandy Schultz, an experienced grower of orchids for over 30 years, to discuss the orchid family with an introduction to genera and species and their culture. She will discuss the best locations for growing orchids, repotting, mounting and orchids in the landscape. Also covered will be orchid pests, diseases, and fertilizers.

No other medium can capture the translucent quality of light like watercolor. In this course you will learn how to use this inherent ability of watercolor to create beautiful transparent colors that captures the light and brilliance of the garden. Basics, that are the backbone of a successful painting such as color theory, composition, and design elements will be covered. You will learn how to work with painting from a photograph and from still life.
The goal of the class is to make a difficult medium easier to learn and manage while producing beautiful paintings you will be proud of.
Participants must bring their chosen subject reference materials to class, such as photographs taken in the Garden, plants, flowers or other objects of interest. Basic knowledge of watercolor painting is required.
This class occurs weekly on TUESDAYS beginning on 04/13/2021 through 05/18/2021 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm Eastern Time.
Instructor Bio: Marilyn Valiente is a visual artist living in South Florida. After her bachelor’s degree in art education from the University of Florida, she continued her education in psychology having achieved a Master’s degree in mental health counseling and a PhD in pastoral psychology. Her paintings have been exhibited both nationally and internationally. She is a signature member of both the Miami Watercolor Society and the Florida Watercolor Society. Among her recent awards in watercolors alone by the Miami Watercolor Society is “Judges Recognition” spring exhibition 2021, and “First place” in the spring exhibition 2018 exhibition, “Best in show” fall exhibition 2017. She is past president of Miami Watercolor Society for the year 2017 and 2018. Marilyn is currently president of the Coral Gables chapter the oldest and prestigious professional organization of women artist: The National League of American PEN women.

Students at all levels are welcome to learn the fascinating art of pastels. Discover how to paint in soft pastel, considered by many as the purest of painting media. Soft pastel is bright, colorful and easy to learn. Award-winning Miami artist, Dan Bondroff, will teach students how to create tropical landscape paintings in soft pastel from concept to completion.

Share and get creative along with other fellow artists under the guidance of Carlos Gallostra in our live seven-day Painting Studio: From Portraits to Florals. Designed for beginners and seasoned artists alike, this figurative painting workshop positions the participant to explore subject matter ranging from portraits, landscapes, and florals. Using your own photo reference as the muse , you will learn how to effectively develop your subject in oil paint through tailored mentoring and critiquing. Students already working in acrylic are also welcomed. The workshop introduces the student to a step-by-step process that facilitates capturing the subject from the initial contour to the fully rendered form in tonal value and color. Topics discussed will range from ideas on observation, measurement, color mixing and expressive mark making. Through in depth investigation, the students will employ a signature approach towards crafting their own masterwork.

For those who aim to take their skill sets in drawing farther, this class introduces the student to a step-by-step process that
facilitates capturing the portrait from the initial contour to the fully rendered form in graphite or charcoal. Topics
discussed will range from ideas on observation, measurement, and value as well as techniques meant to finalize the turn of
form as well as the relationship of darkness and lights. Through in-depth investigation, the students will employ a
signature approach to developing their own independent projects.

BIOGRAPHY:
Carlos Gallostra is a representational artist whose practice has been shaped under numerous celebrated mentors in the
U.S. and Italy throughout the years. He holds a B.F.A. from the prestigious New World School of the Arts of Miami,
where he has taught over the past ten years, as well as an M.F.A. and an M.S. from the Pratt Institute of New York. In
addition, he has furthered his studies at various ateliers, academies, and museums throughout the U.S. and abroad. Next to
crafting his work, he takes great joy in imparting ideas, approaches, and helping his students find their voices in the arts.

Join Ray Kincaid, Miami Bonsai Society member, to learn the basics of the ancient art form of bonsai. Learn the history of bonsai, understand the basic care and maintenance of growing a bonsai tree, explore the tools used to create bonsai, and learn the styles and rules that govern styling a bonsai tree. Each participant will receive a bonsai tree to work with and take home! No prior experience needed.
